Years of history and education

It has its roots back in 1984 when the then Christian Action Faith Ministry (now Action church International – ACI) established the Dominion Theological Seminary as a private non-accredited institution to train the clergy for charismatic and Pentecostal ministries.

Until 1993, the higher education legislations of Ghana did not permit the operations of private universities. In 2009, Dominion was established as a separate institution from the seminary as a pure higher education institution to advance learning, discovery, and innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Business (STEB). It was intended as a new model for higher education in Africa where students are nurtured to discover new ideas that will positively impact organizations and society in an ethical manner. It marked a shift from the prevalent and rigid higher education model in Africa that produces rote learners who can recall facts but lacking in creativity, grit, social and critical thinking skills.

In 2012, the institution was granted an accreditation by Ghana’s National Accreditation Board (NAB), the State body charged with the exclusive responsibility for accrediting higher education institutions and assuring the quality of education they offer. Prior to its accreditation, Dominion entered into a mentorship agreement with one of Ghana’s top tree higher education institutions, the University of Cape Coast in fulfillment of the requirements for gaining accreditation as a private higher education institution in Ghana. The institution started with three undergraduate Schools – School of Business, School of Theology and School of Science and Technology. Plans are now far advanced to establish a graduate school to offer Masters and PhD programmes.

With this accreditation, Dominion opened its doors to its first cohort of sixty-one (61) students in the same year. Prof. Edward Dua Agyemang was appointed as the first President of Dominion.

In 2014, the seminary became a branch of Dominion for ease of administration and governance. This merger was however reversed again in 2018 to free the seminary from the rigid quality assurance governance procedures in operation at Dominion.

In 2015, Dominion became the first private university to gain an accreditation from the National Board for Professional and Technical Examination (NAPTEX) to offer Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses.
